Trading Doubt for Uncompromising Faith

Have you ever given a big problem over to God and felt an instant assurance that He would take care of it? You had faith to believe in His Word, and you trusted it?

But without warning, you began to question. You started looking at the impossibility of the situation, and you tried to reason it out according to human understanding.

You still claimed to believe, but secretly doubted God could handle it.

Trading Doubt for Uncompromising Faith

I’ve been there too. That’s a tough place for us to be because a big part of our faith is believing God is in control of all things. When we harbor hidden doubts that He is able to work in our circumstances, we take control away from God and claim it for ourselves. And I know from personal experience, that’s shaky territory.

James 1:6 tells us this, “But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.”

I know how that feels, being blown and tossed by the wind. I long to be steadfast in my belief, but my human mind tries to reason things out. I entertain thoughts like, “I don’t know how this could work. This is unbelievable. There’s no way.” I think about all the possible alternatives, and before you know it I’m right back to unsteady waters.

Learning to grasp belief is not easy. It takes practice to stand firm against doubt, and thankfully we have God’s Word to lead the way. In my journey to truly understand what it means to believe, I found a verse that completely changed my perspective on what it looks like to have uncompromising faith.

“Let us hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, since he who promised is faithful.” Hebrews 10:23 CSB

Truth for When We Doubt

God is faithful. Not only sometimes, not just when it’s convenient, but always. Memorizing this verse helped me strengthen my resolve to trust with unwavering faith. I pray it will do the same for you.

There are times in life when we need to believe God for big things. It’s in those times we need the assurance of this verse to remind us of an important truth.

Our job is to hold onto God’s promises and trust His faithfulness. When we do, we can move from constant doubt to uncompromising belief.

So the next time you begin to question or find yourself in a situation that seems impossible, know without a doubt that God is faithful. We can hold onto that promise today and everyday.

I share more ways to trade doubt for uncompromising faith in my new book, Cinched: Living with Unwavering Trust in an Unfailing God, which releases next week. You can find out more about it on this page.

In the book, I’ve included a Glossary of God’s Promises to help point you to help from God’s Word for your most difficult times. Discover Freedom by Depending on God

A couple of weeks ago, I shared a vulnerable and life-changing moment with you. A miraculous God-encounter disguised as our usual weekly visit to church. (If you missed that devo, you can read it here.)

You see, at the time I thought my weariness came as a result of troubles my family was going through. I didn’t think I’d be happy again until we got past our problems.

Everyone has a mountain to climb now and then, and I hoped we could just hold on until we made it to the other side. I wanted a downward slope where I could breathe and enjoy the view for a while. But God knew I needed more than to hold on and get through it. I sensed the need to search my heart and allow God to “renew a steadfast spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10)

I faced a convicting truth that defining day at church. God gave me a choice. I could continue to live with doubt, worry, and weariness, or I could find freedom. I said I trusted Him to provide for my needs and protect my family. But did I depend on Him enough to actually receive joy in the midst of my problems?

Find Freedom Through Your Dependence on God.

Once I renewed my commitment to give these burdens back to God, something amazing happened.

I didn’t walk out of church that day with a resolution or changed circumstances. The problem didn’t go away, but I’m totally okay with that, because I left with something even better. I left with a renewed freedom in Jesus Christ that brought a bounce back to my step I’d forgotten I had. I found joy in letting God be God.

Finding Joy in Letting God Be God

When we find ourselves stuck in a hopeless place, our loving Father tells us there’s so much more to this abundant life He offers. If we wait for life to calm down before enjoying our dependence on God, we will miss out on the unspeakable joy He created just for us.

It is possible to enjoy life, even when we’re facing one battle after another. In the middle of our struggles, we have joy through His presence. Even when problems persist, God gives us reason to rejoice. Let’s reclaim the peace and rest God gave us, so that we can enjoy freedom as we trust in Him.

I’ve created a special resource just for you— my community here in this online home. It came out of a difficult time, one where I realized how deeply I needed a right-now promise from God for my current season. It’s called 100 of God’s Promises for Your Unraveled Heart.
