I have to admit – feeling God’s gentle nudge to begin writing brought with it a frenzy of excitement. I couldn’t get enough words on paper. I wrote all the time. Those first blog posts and articles showed little mastery for the craft, but it felt right.
Soon I saw a trend – one that threatened to cast a shadow on my new-found calling. As I joined communities of Christian writers and sought out friends with similar passion, I noticed something. Hundreds – no thousands – of people also felt the call to write.
Instantly my mind began formulating the questions all writers ask.
Am I really called to write? Did I hear God wrong? There are so many other gifted writers out there already. Why should I even bother?
I know, I know. We shouldn’t question our calling. But I still wondered why God would need me when He had so many other people penning their words with such skill?
God does not limit His message to a chosen few. His Words are for all of us. And through several Scriptures, God confirms His desire for Christians to record what they learn through writing.
Allow me to share 5 Scriptures that confirm your calling to write.
1. "The children of your servants shall dwell secure; their offspring shall be established before you" (Psalm 108:28 ESV).
As a parent, my greatest prayer is for my child to love the Lord “with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his mind.” These words from Jesus in Matthew 22:37 verify our first and most important job. We want to leave a legacy for our kids.
I’m not guaranteed tomorrow with my children, but my words will be here long after I’m gone. So whenever God chooses to take me to my heavenly home, I can rest knowing my kids will have a written account of my relationship with Christ.
2. "Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell you what he has done for my soul" (Psalm 66:16).
I for one do not like to argue. However, some people enjoy engaging in friendly, and sometimes not-so-friendly, discussion about beliefs and the existence of God. But there’s one truth no one can argue – the truth of what God has done for me.
God rescued me from death. He forgave me for all the bad choices of my past. He gave grace when I didn’t deserve it. He blessed me in miraculous ways that go beyond human explanation. These are my experiences. When I share them, no one can dispute my testimony. I’m the eye-witness.
3. "In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 5:16).
Starting conversations about my Creator makes me feel alive. It keeps my perspective in the right place. And, it shines a light for others. Writing about Jesus brings me great joy.
I remember when I first became a Christian. I attended church with a group of people who always smiled. They seemed so happy! I wanted to feel what they felt. Watching them and seeing how they handled the ups and downs of life showed me the source of their smiles. The more we chat about the goodness of God, the more others become interested in learning about Him.
4. "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart" (Hebrews 4:12).
Writers love to read. And chances are, a writer can tell you a specific book that changed his life. Knowing how powerful words can be, writers embrace their responsibility with bold courage because they know the power of words.
The words God prompts me to share can speak straight to the heart of the reader. What an awesome truth!
5. "Let this be recorded for a generation to come, so that a people yet to be created may praise the Lord" (Psalm 102:18).
For evangelical Christians, Jesus Christ’s promised return brings expectation. It also gives us a burden for those who do not believe. (See 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17.)
Let’s get right down to it. When Jesus returns and Christians leave the earth, there will be questions. People will be seeking. Where will those left behind find hope when they search for answers?
The more we write today, the more digital hope will be available after we are gone. God calls us to leave documentation behind.
So if you’re feeling God nudging you into a new writing adventure today, listen closely to His voice. And if you choose to write, please know this. There’s no such thing as too much encouragement! The testimony we write today could leave a lasting impact on someone’s eternal future.
Blessings,
Kristine
